Description of assignment
In 2000, the Police academy had a number of locations in the centre of the Netherlands which needed large-scale maintenance, no longer met current educational standards or were too small for the number of students. The plan was for renovation and new build of the monumental complex on the Arnhemseweg in Apeldoorn, with the aim of creating a location where recruitment, selection, education and research come together.
The Police academy was renovated and expanded into a complex of approximately 12,000 m² with about 750 work places and various teaching and meeting rooms. The building, a former preparatory seminary dating from 1935, was expanded with new build, an open learning centre with a fixed and flexible layout, a restaurant and meeting rooms. The concepts smart and revitalizing are characteristic of the design of the renovation and restoration of the complex. As a result, the building has become more energy-efficient and comfortable, without loss of character or damage to the listed building.
